Sata calls on ECZ to extend voting time

Patriotic Front leader Michael Sata has called on the Electoral Commission of Zambia (ECZ) to extend voting hours at centre’s that opened late for voting.

Mr Sata said it is imperative that all the registered voters are accorded an opportunity to be part of the country’s democratic process.

ZANIS reports that he said all registered voters in the country should be allowed to exercise their right to vote for their preferred candidates in today’s tripartite elections and therefore ECZ should ensure that no one is disfranchised.

Mr Sata was speaking to journalists shortly after touring Vere Chiluba polling centre in Lusaka’s Munali Constituency.

Late opening of voting characterised many polling centres in Lusaka.

At Vera Chiluba Basic School, which has over five thousand registered voters, voting was opened after 08:00 hours because the centre did not have voting booths.

The situation agitated many voters who had queued up to vote from as early as 04:00 hours.

However, after the opening of voting, the situation was calmed and people have been voting peacefully since that time. The voter turnout has been described by many as satisfactory.

And Mr Sata said it is his constitutional right to tour polling centres as an aspiring presidential candidate.

Asked if his tour of polling centres could influence the outcome of the elections, Mr Sata said he was not the one who made the law.

On the late opening of most polling stations in Lusaka, the opposition leader took a swipe at the Electoral Commission of Zambia (ECZ) saying they were trying to confuse the whole electoral process.

The PF leader earlier in the morning cast his vote at Jacaranda Basic School in Kabwata Constituency.

However, Presiding Officer Jonathan Masebo dispelled assertions that some people were trying to rig the elections.

Mr Masebo could not give a comprehensive explanation as to why the ballot booths were not delivered on time.

A check by ZANIS at Mtendere Basic School and Mtendere Pre School found voting progressing smoothly, with voting been conducted in a peaceful manner.

The residents who had turned up to vote from as early as 04:00 hours said they did not want to be left out in the country’s democratic dispensation.

Meanwhile, earlier during the day, ECZ Public Relations Manager Chris Akufuna said the electoral body would compensate for the late opening of some polling stations in the country and expressed disappointment that the electoral materials were delayed.

Mr Akufuna told a press briefing in Lusaka today that the electoral officers were advised to deliver the materials a day before voting took place.

He also said that the extension of voting hours would depend on the number of hours respective polling stations delayed to open.

  1. Yes good call, they should extend voting period.

I voted early, I went there and used the ECZ pen to mark a cross on the BOAT and then my X disappeared and then appeared on HH’s hand, then I asked for a PF Pen and marked on the BOAT again and again the X disappeared on HH’s hand and reappeared on the BOAT. Great advice PF to use PF pens when voting. PF Ikali. No Rigging this time. I hope the X behaves and remain on the BOAT until the counting time.

  2. Guess what,Michael Sata is at Mulungushi Int’nal Conf. Centre with some BBC Reporter rehearsing another ‘Ask them’ clip to be taped on Thursday. The PF leader has also promised his fans that he will be more fluen in English this time around.

  3. I thought the ECZ has already extended voting times to those polling stations that started late. For up to the minute news the streaming station QFM is handy!

  4. there is no need to call on ECZ to extend because it is aoutomatic that a delay in opening the voting centre results into compensating the time lost.

  5. There talks the real president of zambia. I count sata as the president of zambia becoz all the majority of normal thinking Zambians likes him.

  6. Greetings to all Zambians. I pray for peace after the results and may god,s MERCY be upon the nation Zambia and all the poeple of Zambia and the foreigners ib Zed. God makes leaders and he removes them, so leaders accept what ever the results will be.
    Jusus delivers souls.

  7. hey hey hey No. 11, Koffi which normal Zambians are you talking about? Are the Kaponyas the normal thinking Zambians you are reffering to? Kaponyas especially after taking tujilijili, strongly suspect you are one of them. Sata himself is half mad, kaponya who lives on cigar highly immoral like dora abusive as a thug and un cooperative as a chainama case. pipo dont wash your dirty linen in public…. Sata wining is a cursing to Zambia, God help us?

    • #15, I am afraid, do you need a medical doctor in charge of brains? A psychriatist! Which BIBLE cites of a CURSE? Remember our Country is Xtian Nation. Only GOD gives leADERS.

    • Which God can help you? which God can allow this scrap. Don’t mention the name of God on scrap. Your response is exactly what no. 11 is talking about. You need should visit chainama.

  8. #11.
Thats the problem with you PatheticFools,u’v got a tendence of speaking on behalf of everyone_Get real, there many of us who dislike,no who HATE sata..and thats the reason why we ‘don’t tell them’ when we see riggers doing their job.VIVA MMDnUPND VIVA!!

  9. Sata has no reason for calling ECZ for time extention when as early as 08:00hrs ECZ had anounced already that they will extend the voting period. He is just not intouch with himself watch the pace what happens next

  10. But what is happening in Kanyama @ Nakatindi polling station with the number of people that haven’t been able to vote?? ECZ address them please!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  11. Hey hold it! @ political philosopher #15 Your language leaves much to be desired. Why do we have kaponyas? Is it not becoz of RB and the MMD baffoons? No strategy and moral integrity is seen in this leadership. Youths are languishing, resorting to prostitution and drug abuse not becoz they love it but becoz pipo like you who looks down on others who needs help are put as leaders of pipo.

    • you really do not know what you are talking about. learn me help see well, MMD has been in power for the past 20years Sata was part of it part of the 10 years as a pillar in mmd. Sata was there before mmd RB and Sata are the same hopeless criminals we have around, they have no heart for Zambians but there pockets. What is special about sata who is even worse than RB where reasoning is concerned yet both are dull and heartless. Even those who work civil servant who are degree holders are paid 2.5m monthly housing included, how much is a normal house in lUSAKA, YOU know so well its 1.5 what remain to sustain the family, and what more those that have diplomas and certificates, its hell my brother. Be thoughtful and change for better…. Sorry but that just the sata i know

  12. whether they extend in lusaka or not the impact always comes from the rural where MMD is still enjoying popularity and am seing MMD winning with a good margin cause alot of these noise makers did not vote

  13. @frank mutubila….tawakwata mano….eimwe mwebakuti balemilila abakashi namwikalafye zee, ati abantu bama jelousifye. Wake up!

  14. If there is any failure in zambia, its ECZ and its Boss. The voting process has been underated not by the Zambian people but the Commission. The reasons are known to themselves.Otherwise any erruption in the violence will not be blamed on any political party but the lapses of the ECZ. Irregularities did not occur only in Lusaka but through out the country. This should be a big lesson learned

  15. sata fuseke! wa loser! daisy who are u supporting? i missed u my sweetheart. i remember the old days when u and i blogged in a romantic way. it was as good as dinner with you.

  16. We have done the job we’ve voted MMD Out the end corruption – I want the some Chanda Chimba on the justice line-up and the following but not limited to: Rhupia, George Kunda, Ronnie, Dora, Kayuka, Pricilla Isaac, Mambilima, I.G, Editors ZNBC,Times Of Zambia,Daily Mail, Director General ZNBC God of Justice will bring you to book work hard and rigg else its pay back to injustices and crimes against Zambians

  17. Welcome SATA and Congratulations in advanvce. I congratulate you in advance just in case these MMD chaps chop my head off as their trail some 1000km.

  18. ECZ regulations are clear cast your vote and go home or away from the centre. This is what HH, Magande, Muluti, Miyanda, RB, Chipimo jr,Nawakwi and others have honourably done. However, Michael Chilufwa Sata of PF sees it fit to be visiting polling stations. This is uncalled for and not necessary after all peace has been maintained reasonably well. This casts doubt on Sata character as one to be head of state fanning causes of violence. He is certainly NOT FIT FOR THE PURPOSE.

    • And who told you there is peace? Haven’t you been watching the news…..O….wait no you are taking tugili and the sweets Banda designed for you and thats why you are not sure of what you are talking about. Mandevu is a mess and there are so many irregularities going on or what irregularity?…..Things are not going the way they are suppose to be….Foolish RB said everything is in place since you are so good at remembering remember?

    • IWE CHIKALA MULEKWATA AMANO THATS WHY U FAIL TO REASON PROPERLY,,U CAN’T COMPARE SATA WITH THOZ COWARD POLITICIANS,THEY ARE A YES BWANA YES BWANA,AND WE DONT WANT SUCH,SATA ALETEKA U LIKE IT OR NOT,OF COURSE IT IS HIS RIGHT TO DO THAT,WE RECOMEND IT

  19. I’m enjoying coming from guys from Zed, they re at the scene of action…unless most us the armchair analysit… Guys (from mother-land) pls continue with updates – either way….

  20. You report late at work where you gain a 50kg of kabunga. To go and vote you awake up at 04.00 hrs,  polling station opens at 06.00 hrs. strange!!

  21. Just watched Sata on znbc exchanging words with edward Mumbi, his former secretary general. I couldn’t believe it that the man aspiring for state house could be talking to an ordinary citizen on camera like that. I wonder what his followers felt like!

  22. That’s  why this man ends up in shame,he likes publicity too much.he is everywhere.no body knows whete rupiah is not even HH.but this  chimp is justjust all the show

  23. “normal thinking Zambians like him (Sata)” I beg to differ I am normal but never in my wildest dreams would I vote for someone who as minister of local housing took govt money put it in his personal account and took interest, or someone who undiplomatic always insults people, cant attend a debate because he has no vision for the country, supported Chiluba for a third term, left govt because he refused to work with someone from a small tribe (mwanawasa). I am not sure what is there to like about Sata, just another 5 more years of underdevelopment if he becomes president.

    • #57 .Accusations. Where is the proof? If Sata had committed those offences ,do you think the late LPM would have left him alone? Too bad for you because a new era just statarted. Sata’s era!!

    • #57 Cristal WAWA CHIKALA…U LIKE IT OR NOT SATA ALETEKA THIS TIME,ALREADY U WANTED TO RIGG,BUT NATUZULULA KALE MULEPONOKWA UNO MWAKA BA FIKALA

  24. People did anyone watch the 19hrs news this evening? The comedian, Cycle Mata, was at it again. That is the sort of behaviour we expect of him. Any thing that ressembles sanity is strange to the man.

How nice that he has finally been consigned to the archives! I wonder what will happen to all the Pa Fwaka supporters.

  25. Interesting, looking at the blog. The language being used by the PF supporters is typical of their brand exactly the same as their president.

  26. I did cast my vote proudly today, i did this not for me but for my little Boy.

I hope Mr Sata and PF Wins. i am a free Zambia who has the right to his opinon…….

  27. Sata and Mumbi in a near punch upSeptember 20, 2011 | Filed under: Zambia | Posted by: editor
Patriotic Front Leader Michael Sata on Tuesday morning exchanged bitter words with his former Secretary General Edward Mumbi at Lusaka Girls Basic School.
Mr Sata who was going round polling stations in Lusaka found Mr Mumbi at the polling station where he confronted him for using the title of former PF secretary General.
The PF leader also accused Mr Mumbi of being part of the people who are plotting to rig elections through the Electoral Commission of Zambia.
In an interview with ZNBC Mr Mumbi said he lost his calm and responded to Mr Sata who was provoking him.
Mr Mumbi says the PF leader was pocking fingers in his face while he kept speaking on top of his voice

  28. it’s so sad to see someone who wants to be president insult in full view of camers like that, what more if he won? I was so embarrassed in presesnce of my children to hear an old man insult.

  29. This is plain crazy, first you encourage people to turn out and vote, yet you only allow 50% sometimes less to vote. And you call that democracy?

  30. #64 Ba Shimwana: “Interesting, looking at the blog. The language being used by the PF supporters is typical of their brand exactly the same as their president.”

…………………………………………………………………..Birds of the same feather flock together! He has company, they are it.

  31. UPND NOW YOU SHOULD KNOW THAT YOU NEEDED PF FOR A SOLID CHANGE NOW YOU HAVE PREVENTED A CLEAR WIN YOUR SOLO MOVE IS A JOKE ITS ONLY PF GIVING MMD COMPETiTION

  32. ECZ’s handling of elections has been a sham to say the least. It outlines the biggest challenge to Zambian work culture….laziness and lack of dedication to duty.

  33. YOU pipo refering to 2006 and 2008 elections will terribly cry.things have changed greatly.pipo want total change.they dont want nonsense at all.the margin is very big to catch.4get past elections and remember that this time over 1 million young voters registered especially to make a change.dont be ignorant.Sata is unstoppable now.look at eastern n n/western povinces.was the voting pattern like this in 2006,2008 elections?accept and swallow yo pride.

  34. PF has far with comfortable leads in results……….. MMD blogger please do not collapse you might WIN…”DONCHE KUBEBA”

  35. Can you all people debate like responsible adults… We will not accept a minority president. Thats why 50+ 1 was necessary nomba fi NCC had to ruin it for everyone!! VIVA PF!

  36. Everything is going on well, there is no problem in this article, Mr Sata has a point and ECZ agreed to extend the time. So all is well……Lets all wait for that time.

  37. Well I don’t know how old this picture in the article is but it is a good sign to see the two leaders smilling to one another. That’s what we want to see even after elections we are one people for one common goal. One Zambia…….one Nation.

  38. We are all Zambians.
    Time of campaign is gone
    The die has been cust.
we will embrace anyone who wins.
    We must love one another.
If RB becaomes pres, he will be ours.
If SATA becomes pres, he will be for all of us.
if HH becomes pres, he will be for all of us.
Lets all embrace the winner and love one another.
Viva Zambia, Viva democracy, viva peace.

  39. William Banda beaten.
